STOPJEŽ on Večna pot |
Amphibians are especially vulnerable participants in traffic due to their life history. Migration routes between terrestrial and aquatic habitats often lead across roads, exposing amphibians to danger of being run over. Most problematic are roadkills occurring in time of mass spring and autumn migrations that can threaten or even destroy local populations. Additionally mass roadkills make roads slippery and therefore dangerous for all participants. One of such "black spots" is also Večna pot in Ljubljana that was chosen by Societas herpetologica slovenica – Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles as a place of their project "Varstvo dvoživk na Večni poti (Protection of amphibians on Večna pot)«. Already the 4th year in a row, members of the Society with the help of volunteers had set up the fence along the Večna pot and performed daily evening surveys. During evening walks all amphibians among the fence were collected and transferred across the road. This year also LUTRA, Institute for Conservation of Natural Heritage, joined the project. Our project STOPJEŽ – Traffic and animals includes also collaboration with NGOs working on similar field. Action took place from 12th to 30th March 2011. In this time we joined the evening surveys and helped both setting up and putting away the fence. In 17 days we checked daily 900 meters long section and collected more than 2700 amphibians. We found 3 species, among which toads prevailed. Unfortunately still around 600 amphibians ended under the wheels. For more information of recent and previous actions please visit project site. |
